WHAT?

The Viet Green and Low-Emission Rice Brand is a national certification and branding framework designed to institutionalize low-carbon rice production in Vietnam.  It positions Vietnamese rice within the global transition toward sustainable and low-emission food systems.

Developed through collaboration between the TRVC Project and VIETRISA, the brand combines:

  • Technical implementation support (SNV/TRVC)
  • Formal certification authority (VIETRISA)

This ensures that low-emission rice is not a project-based label, but embedded within a recognized national industry framework.

Growing ESG Market Demand

WHY IT MATTERS

The Viet Green and Low-Emission Rice Brand is strategically important for three core reasons:

1

It builds institutional credibility beyond individual enterprises.

By anchoring certification within an industry-recognized authority (VIETRISA), the brand shifts low-emission rice from project initiative to formal governance mechanism — enhancing trust among international buyers and financial institutions.
2

It enhances Vietnam’s competitiveness in ESG-sensitive markets.

As global procurement standards tighten, verified low-emission credentials reduce exclusion risk and strengthen negotiation leverage. The brand provides a unified national response rather than fragmented enterprise-level claims.
3

It converts sustainability effort into market recognition.

Without a nationally recognized brand, emission-reduction practices remain invisible to buyers. The brand transforms technical compliance into a credible market signal.

Lesson 1

Certification Transforms Production Effort into Market Power

Implementation Reality

  1. Prior to TRVC, several Vietnamese rice exporters had already adopted low-emission farming practices. However, these efforts were not supported by standardized carbon accounting, independent verification, or nationally recognized certification.
  2. Under TRVC project, when enterprises such as Chơn Chính obtained certification under the Viet Green and Low-Emission Rice framework, they gained access to ESG-sensitive European markets and strengthened their competitive positioning. Meanwhile, earlier adopters without certification did not retain first-mover advantage once buyers required verified sustainability credentials.

Lesson Learned

  1. Low-emission production creates market value only when translated into certified, measurable, and branded market signals.
  2. Without institutional recognition, sustainability remains commercially invisible.

Policy Recommendation

  1. Institutionalize the low-emission rice certification system at national level beyond project scope.
  2. Integrate certified low-emission rice into export promotion strategies.
  3. Ensure alignment with international ESG and sustainability reporting frameworks to enhance credibility.

SNV/TRVC Catalytic Role

  1. Promotes standardized low-emission rice cultivation
  2. Co-develops MRV methodology & digital platform with independent verifiers
  3. Facilitates industry–certification collaboration
